"WINGS 2009"


THE NINETEENTH ANNUAL
Model aircraft Competition and Display

Presented by
The Australian National Aviation Museum

10am to 5pm. Saturday/Sunday  
14th and 15th November 2009

The Australian National Aviation Museum once again presents Australia's
longest running and most prestigious aviation model exhibition!


A great opportunity to enjoy an extensive array of the model-maker's art displayed in the museum amidst a background of some of the country's rarest and finest historic aircraft aircraft and aviation artefacts. Anybody with an interest in aircraft modelling or aviation in general is welcome. This is an excellent opportunity to tour the museum's collection of historic aircraft and take in the new displays and acquisitions while enjoying the great array of models on display.
There will be heavily discounted model kits available for sale along with magazines, DVD's, books and aircraft-associated ephemera. There will be specialist vendors for the aviation and modelling enthusiast and all this can be enjoyed in the museum's unique surroundings. For the competitors there will be kits, trophies and awards to be won in all classes. Further details of which will be available from the museum or the this website from mid-July and all modelling clubs will be forwarded relevent details at the time - however independent modellers not associated with clubs are welcome, and encouraged to enter.

 

Entries to the Competition are invited in the following Categories, a model can only be entered to compete in one Category, but may be eligible for multiple awards.


THE CATEGORIES
(provisional)


1. Junior (under 15 years only)

all scales and classes

 

2. Australian Air League Cadets (Air League youth members only)
all scales and classes

 

3. Australian Air Force Cadets (Air Force Cadets youth members only)
all scales and classes


4. Out of Box Small Scale
Scales up to and including 72nd scale that are in the Out-of-Box Class
*note see Classes below

 

5. Out of Box Medium Scale
Scales greater than 72nd scale, up to and including 48th scale, that are in the Out-of-Box Class
*note see Classes below


6. Out of Box Large Scale
All Scales greater than 48th scale, that are in the Out-of-Box Class
*note see Classes below

 

7. Enhanced Small Scale
Scales up to and including 72nd scale that are in the Enhanced Class
*note see Classes below

 

8. Enhanced Medium Scale
Scales greater than 72nd scale, up to and including 48th scale, that are in the Enhanced Class
*note see Classes below


9. Enhanced Large Scale
All Scales greater than 48th scale, that are in the Enhanced Class
*note see Classes below

 

10. Dioramas  & Miscellaneous Category
This category cover all scales and include both Out-of-box and Enhanced Classes for Dioramas and Miscelleneous aviation subjects i.e. aero engines

 


*Note, unless otherwise stated, there is no age limitation on any category



Display tables will also be available for clubs and individual modellers who wish to present models for display only, including Giant Scale and Radio controlled/Flying Models.



AWARDS AND PRIZES
(provisional)
Best of Category
Selected by the Judges, and presented in each category, this award consists of a framed certificate and a premium quality kit from the Revell, Italeri or Academy range.


Excellence Awards

Selected by the Judges, as the number of models deemed worthy of special commendation may vary from one category to another,  a total of ten Excellence Awards in the form of a framed certificate are presented regardless of category, in place of second and third prizes in each category.

People's Choice Award
Awarded to the model that gets the most votes by the members of the public who attend the Museum over Wings weekend, in the form of a framed certificate presented regardless of category.

 

Museum's Choice Award
Awarded to the model selected by the Museum Members as their choice, in the form of a framed certificate presented regardless of category.
 

Best Museum Model
Awarded and selected by the Museum as the best model that represents a subject that is in the Museum's Collection, i.e. DAP Beaufighter, Mirage Jet Fighter etc, in the form of a framed certificate presented regardless of category.

 

Wings Best of Show
Awarded to the model selected by the Judges from the Category Winners, as being the Best of Show Model, in the form of a framed certificate are presented regardless of category.


Award Judges
The Wings judges are thoroughly expert on every aspect of aviation modeling and entries are judged 
on a combination of just three simple criteria:
Accuracy of detail,
Quality of Finish
and where appropriate, originality and/or inventiveness.
all in accordance with the conditions of the competition.

The Judging panel consists of a cross section of representatives of the museum and the various clubs
 participating in the event. Judging is made on the Saturday evening after the closing of the museum
and the awards are placed out early on the Sunday afternoon.


 

DEFINITIONS OF CLASSES

Out-of-Box (OOB)
Models can be completed with the decals supplied with the kit and in the colour scheme nominated by 
the kit instructions or may include other decals, colour schemes or additions allowed by the original
instructions, e.g. bracing wires on biplanes as indicated by the instructions.

Enhanced
Includes any form of addition or modification to the original kit not indicated on the kit instruction set.
 




CONDITIONS OF THE COMPETITION

Model Subject
Models must be of aircraft or of an aviation theme, and where the aviation theme is not an aircraft
  i.e. for instance where the missile's Transport vehicle is the predominant portion of the model,
  e.g. Scud, Patriot or MLRS, the model will be considered to be an "armour model" 
and therefore not eligible to compete in Wings except as part of a Diorama.

Models which have gained an award in a previous Wings competition are not eligible for entry in this year's competition.

Note :For Wings 2006 onwards, (unlike previous years) Helicopter models are not provided a separate competition,  category or class,  but are invited as aircraft in the main categories)

Entrants own work
Models must be built and completed by the entrant alone without assistance from another person or another source.

Judging
Judging is to be based on the IPMS/USA Competition Handbook and is made on the Saturday evening after the closing of the museum and the awards are  placed out early on the Sunday afternoon.

Entry to Museum for Competitors
Free entry to the museum during the Wings Competition will be provided to competitors who choose to attend the event over the weekend.

Competition Entry Fees
No Competition entry fee will be charged to competitors, nor any limit placed on the amount of models that may be entered by a single competitor into any Categories.

Delivery of Model Entries
Models may be delivered for entry between 5pm and 7pm on Friday 14th of November 
or between 9am and noon on Saturday 15th of November at the museum,
 at the corner of Second Avenue and First Street Moorabbin Airport Melways 87 G4 
While every possible care will be taken the museum and its operators cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage to an entry  while on display or in the museum's charge.

Pickup of Model Entries
Entries may only be collected after the closing of the competition at 5pm on Sunday 16th November or during the following week during museum open hours (see below).
Entries should be collected no later than 5pm the following Sunday.

Barbeque chops and sausages, salads, hot coffee, tea and other refreshments are available on site.
