The Australian National Aviation Museum, is located at Moorabbin Airport near Melbourne Victoria and is recognised as Australia’s only true National Aviation Collection.

Owned and operated by the Australian Aircraft Restoration Group, a community based, not for profit Company, limited by Guarantee, the collection was established in 1962, the permanent museum opened in 1964 and is the oldest volunteer Aviation Museum in Australia.

Over the last 47 years, the museum has saved a number of significant examples of Australia's aviation heritage, and with nearly 50 aircraft on display, in storage or under restoration, and over 20 engines on display,  the Museum is one of the largest in Australia.

The Australian National Aviation Museum contains the finest collection of Australian made and designed aircraft, as well as the broadest collection, with representative types covering the development of airtravel and military aviation in Australia, along with display engines from the flying machines of 1910 to the modern jet fighters.

"Campaign for the establishment of a formal
National Aviation Museum"

The AARG commenced collecting airframes in 1962 simply to act as a "fire-brigade" to save the last examples of aircraft from becoming pyres or pots and pans and to buy time for the establishment of a National Collection, as had been the case in many other countries. Aircraft were not hard to come by due to the last WW2 types held in storage being scrapped and many wooden aircraft being grounded due to glue deterioration. The AARG established its Moorabbin Air Museum in 1965 and has continued to operate it for nearly 50 years using its volunteer labour and investing its gate takings in modest buildings to house the collection. The AARG has assembled a world class collection but is displaying it in a third world facility.

A National Aviation Museum was first proposed in the late 1950's and the Piggott Report of 1975 listed such a museum as one of only three priority themes worthy of National Museums, the others have all since been established, but the creation of a formal National Aviation Museum by the Federal Government remains un-finished business.

The AARG has now launched a national petition and is seeking the assistance of Austalian aviation enthusiasts and the general public to raise signatures for this petition.
