CAC Comair Bus
The Museum preserves a number of items other than aircraft, which were produced by the Australian aircraft industry. The Comair Bus is one example which was produced by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) between 1947 and 1975. CAC entered into bus building in an attempt to provide ongoing work for its establishment as wartime contract work was reduced or cancelled.
Apart from buses, CAC produced a variety of household goods, including kettles, pressure cookers, pre-fabricated houses and fire appliances. Also produced were numerous industrial projects including cooling towers in the Latrobe Valley and the Planetarium Dome.
The Museum's Comair bus was produced in 1972 for a motor transport operator in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, and finished up as a school bus before being retired by its owners and donated to the Museum in 1991.
