JUNKERS JUMO 004b TURBOJET

Junkers Jumo EngineClick on image for larger version
The German Junkers Jumo 004 aircraft engine was the world's first turbojet engine to be designed with an axial flow compressor, and also to be a mass produced  operational  engine. The original Jumo 004A-0 engines were test run on October 11, 1940. Modifications and development increased the power output from 946lbs thrust to 2,200lbs thrust when they were fitted to the Messerschmit Me 262 prototype jet fighter that first flew on July 18, 1942.

Development of the engine to the Jumo 004B brought about a reduction in engine weight from 1,870lbs (850kg) to 1,585lbs (719kg) by the use of lighter alloys in the "hot" sections, plus a reduction in the use of strategic materials that were becoming difficult for Germany to obtain.
Deliveries commenced in June 1943 but recurring turbine failures due to vibration that was finally overcome by a re-design of the turbine blades and a reduction of engine speed from 9,000rpm down to 8,700rpm.

Full production began in early 1944 but delayed the introduction to operational service of the Me 262 and the Arado 234 jet bomber/ reconnaissance aircraft into the European air battle.

Later development produced  the first after burning  gas turbine engine, and  an engine with a variable area exhaust duct both of which would increase the power output, but were too late for production  before the end of hostilities in 1945.
A total of almost 6,000 Jumo 004B engines were produced by Junkers by the end of hostilities.
