curtisS-wright r-2600 cyclone engine

Picture
The Curtiss-Wright R-2600 Cyclone, also known as the "twin cyclone", was a two row fourteen cylinder, supercharged, air cooled radial piston engine developed by Curtiss-Wright and widely used  in aircraft of the 1930s and 1940s.
In 1935, Curtiss-Wright began working on a more powerful version of their R-1820 single row nine cylinder Cyclone engine.

The R-2600 emerged as a 1,600hp engine that was meant to power the C-46 Curtiss Commando transport aircraft and was in fact installed in the prototype, but changes saw the adoption of the 2,000hp Pratt and Whitney R-2800 engine for the production aircraft.
However the R-2600 did power several WW2 military aircraft including the Douglas A20 Havoc, North American B25 Mitchell, Martin Mariner flying boat, Grumman TBF Avenger and the Curtiss SB2C-5 Helldiver.

In excess of 50,000 R-2600 engines were produced by a number of Curtiss-Wright plants around the US during WW2.
