cassutt 111 home built racing and sport aircraft
Tom Cassutt of the USA began designing his Cassutt 1 racing aircraft in 1951. A single seat, single engine, mid wing monoplane, with a fixed tail wheel undercarriage in which Cassutt won the 1958 National Championship Midget Air Races. The Cassutt Special 11 followed in 1959, and 1962 saw home building plans becoming available for the Cassutt 111M. These were enthusiastically received by home builders eager for the 200+Kt (240+mph) performance offered on a 100hp engine. These machines have been raced at the National Air Races at Reno with outstanding success.
A number of Cassutt 111s have been built in Australia including the Museum's example VH-ICI, that was built and donated by Mr Glen Ackman.
